When Giving In Is Our Best Move

Are we "limited" when it comes to our health? A growing number of health experts say we are not. We talk with Dr. Kim D'Eramo about our body's innate healing capacity, the mind-body connection, and the power of surrender. Sometimes we just need to pause the struggle and tune in to what we can't explain.
Dr. Kim D’Eramo is part of a growing group of health experts who think our thoughts can impact our health. She believes our bodies are made of vibrational energy and can heal themselves from the inside. This means, the connection between mind and body is super important, and we have more control over our health than we might think. However, this understanding often comes after a personal health journey, just like it did for Dr. D’Eramo.
Dr. D’Eramo knew from a young age that her thoughts played a big role in her life. However, it wasn't until she got chronically ill that she started noticing some new things about her health.
It's a story a lot of us know all too well. We get really sick and fall into that "I have to get better" mindset. We spend hours looking up our health problems or go to countless doctors. We try out different supplements and switch up our lifestyle. But often... nothing seems to help. Or things get better, but only for a little while.
The Battle's On
Around the time that Dr. D’Eramo was pursuing her professional health training, something began to dawn on her. That everything she did to fight this ill health, was making her life worse than the chronic illness itself. "Nothing I had done made a difference. It seemed the disease was bigger than me and would take over my life," she writes on her site.
She started to understand that, for her, the typical notion of fighting illness was actually keeping her in the same situation.
Some Things are Bigger Than Us
So, Dr. D’Eramo started questioning if the solution to all her health issues was beyond her understanding. Perhaps it was something she hadn't yet embraced. Consequently, she changed her mindset from being in constant battle mode to being open to receiving. She acknowledged that she had no idea how to tackle any of this, even with her medical training.
The notion of surrender and innate healing is not a new one. Dr. D’Eramo explained: "The nervous system is constantly sending messages to every cell in the body. Do we clamp down into fear when we feel pain or fatigue? Or do we relax and allow the body’s healing response to take over? Do we soften, go within and listen, so that we become aware of how we can support the body’s healing mechanism?"
"This does require our participation, however," she added. "When we resist the process, this [nervous] system is interrupted and suppressed. How can we assist our innate healing? We must surrender and listen, rather than react and resist."

A Shift in Focus: Innate Healing
Returning to Dr. D’Eramo’s own health story: It was after she has shifted her focus that her body began to heal. She went from doing, resisting and fighting to surrendering and receiving. It was about learning to connect with the body, she explained. It was also about realising that our inner battle with being sick can make things worse. The result in Dr. D’Eramo’s case? No more pain, no more fever, no more need for medicine, no more chronically tired, no more autoimmune disease.
Too Good To Be True?
Seems too good to be true, right? That's what a lot of us think. But, according to Dr. D’Eramo, giving in, even for a while, saying to ourself; "let's stop seeing this ill health as an enemy," can actually work wonders for our health.
"Our relationship with our body and its symptoms is the greatest determinant of whether we live in health or dis-ease," she explained. "Our inner communication system of thoughts, beliefs, and perspectives has been shown to have a powerful effect on our body’s chemistry."
"So, when we have a symptom," she continued, "we can either react with fear and tension, clamping down into fight-or-flight. Or we can relax to let the body’s intelligence process the information so that we respond from wisdom. It is our inner wisdom that has the capacity to re-balance the body back to health."
This is the body’s innate healing in action," she continued. "You are primarily a vibrational being, not a physical one. So you can let go of the idea that you are limited."

Innate Healing: I Saw It On A Monitor
One day, Dr. Kim D’Eramo saw the mind-body connection in action. She was watching a monitor in the hospital ER where she worked as a doctor. This happened right after she did an "energy tapping" session on a patient who had chest pains. Energy tapping is a mind-body process. It’s when we tap on parts of the body related to energy pathways, while verbalising certain emotions and issues we are dealing with.
"What we did was to release the physical, mental, and emotional energies associated with the patient’s symptoms," Dr. D’Eramo told us. "We tuned into her chest pain and tapped. Then tears flowed. We tapped on the emotions arising of fear and abandonment, then more tears came, and breathing improved."
"Then a final round to welcome all of these suppressed emotions and awareness," she continued: "By now her chest pain was completely resolved, and she was well. After the process, blood pressure and oxygen levels had all returned to normal."
